Romeo x Juliet is a Japanese anime TV series. First broadcast in Japan from April 4, 2007 to September 26, 2007. The anime was based William Shakespeare's famous tragedy play, Romeo and Juliet and revised into a new version.
Romeo × Juliet was also adapted into a manga series, by Kadokawa.
The anime have 24 episodes, produced by Gonzo.
Setting
Neo Verona is a floating island.

Juliet Capulet
Fourteen years ago, Leontes Montague and his men murdered all of the members of House Capulet. Juliet was the only survivor of the House Capulet.
She met Romeo at the ball. They fell in love at the first sight.
Later she knew that her destiny was to devote herself, in order to save Neo Verona.
After Romeo died, she wanted to follow him. So in the end she gave her life to Escalus.

Son of Leontes Montague. Unlike his brutal father, Romeo is upright and kindhearted. He cares for people in Neo Verona.
He met Juliet at the ball and fell in love with her at the first sight.
In the end, as to rescue Juliet from giving her life to the tree Escalus, he died in the fight.
Leontes Montague
Romeo's father. Ruler of Neo Verona. Also a tyrant.
Fourteen years ago, he raised a coup, leading all his men murdered all of the members of House Capulet.
An archer and also a staff officer. He is calm and with full of wisdom.
He likes Juliet. He always helps and supports her at the back.
Curio is very good at using sword. He is not good at talking, but he is a upright and reliable person.
He also likes Juliet, always helps and supports her at the back.
Conrad
The person who was Captain of the Capulet Guards. He saved Juliet and Cordelia from murdered by Montague. And looked after them till they grew up.
Juliet's best friend since they were child. She is also the survivor of the Capulet massacre.
She took care of Juliet and do all the housework at ordinary time.
Later on she married to Benvolio.
Benvolio
Romeo's best friend. Son of the mayor of Neo Verona. He often gives advices to Romeo when he encounters troubles.
A shrewd, ambitious noble who want to get close to Leontes Montague.
Tybalt
Romeo's half brother. He is an illegitimate child of Lord Montague. Leontes Montague once date with a lady of Capulet in order to use her. Later on he abandoned her. But the lady already pregnant. The child she gave birth to is Tybalt.
Because Montague abandoned his mother, Tybalt wants to kill him as revenge.
He was very good at using sword. And he helps and supports Juliet at the back. Hermione
Romeo's fiancee. She betrothed to Romeo in a political marriage.
This character indicates exactly the writer of Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare.
Plot
Fourteen years ago, Neo Verona was ruled by Lord Capulet. One night, Leontes Montague and his men murdered all of the members of House Capulet. He soon became the new king of Neo Verona.

After fourteen years passed, Juliet grown up and became a beautiful lady. In ordinary time, she would dressed up herself as "Red Whirlwind". She was like a upright hero who helped those people suffered from the rule of tyrant Montague.
One day Juliet went to the Rose Party accidentally, which was held by Montague family. At the ball, she met her destiny, Romeo Montague. They fell in love at the first sight.
By that time, both Romeo and Juliet didn't notice they were from the hostile family. Also, these star-crossed lovers haven't noticed their tragic destiny and what trials were waiting for them......

Similarities and Differences Between Original Work, Romeo and Juliet, By William Shakespeare
This anime revises plenty, by adding new elements, such as Dragon Steed, the Great tree Escalus, creating a new version of Romeo and Juliet into a mysterious style.
In the original story, Montague and Capulet are two hostile household. But in this anime, Montague rules the whole country, like a loyalty. Later on, Juliet found her destiny was to devote herself to the Great tree Escalus, in order to save Neo Verona or the island would be collapsed.
Also, the characters are very different from the original version. For example, one character was totally changed his identity, which is Tybalt.
In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt is the nephew to Lady Capulet. But in the anime, he turns into become Lord Montague's illegitimate kid, also Romeo's half brother.
Although the character Tybalt is totally different from the original version but lead the story more theatrical.
Some other minor characters, like Curio, Fransisco,Cordelia and Hermione, they are not really exist in the Shakespeare work. Some of them, their names were adapted by Shakespeare other works.
Although these characters are not from the original version, they still enable the plots more abundant.
The two flowers, Rose and Iris play an important element in this anime, which Shakespeare's version have never mention.
Iris, represents Juliet, also means pure, kind and innocent. Iris is also the flower stand for Capulet household.
Rose, represents Romeo, also means love, passion and wealthy. Rose is also the flower stand for Montague's household.
Similarities between Shakespeare work and the anime, firstly both of them are tragic ending.
Second similarity is that Romeo and Juliet their love and death can bring reconciliation to hatred.
In original work, after the couple died, the hatred between two households also ended.
But in the animation, their death save the Neo Verona and brought peace to two families.

The animation depicts Romeo and Juliet's emotions very well. Also depicts their love very properly, just as the same as Shakespeare's version.
I really enjoyed when I watched this animation, quite touching. I learned that there has a kind of love which will never change until death. And how the power of loving someone can shape us to be more brave and a better person.
